First let me tell you why I included the video above. It is a TED Talk with Elizabeth Gilbert, author of "Eat, Pray, Love." In this Talk she shares her ideas about the challenge of creativity and of being a creative by nature and profession. I loved it! She puts forth the idea that perhaps inspiration is something that comes from outside of ourselves rather than being grown inside of us. The idea that a person works in concert with a creative "genius" [or I would say genie] rather than being a creative genius. She talks about going back to "...a more ancient understanding about the relationship between humans and the creative mystery...."
I got interested in this because I'm about to dive into a creative challenge meant to exercise my creative mind, polish my artistic muse, and...to take Elizabeth Gilbert's idea...invite the creative genie that lives in the wall of my studio, to share something new with me through my work.
Leslie Saeta is an artist I became aware of through her blog talk radio show "Artists Helping Artists." From her website: "...She hosts a weekly talk radio show titled “Artists Helping Artists” which is currently listened to by over 20,000 artists per week...Leslie also hosts a twice yearly painting challenge titled 'Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days.' Each January and September over 1500 artists from all over the world join Leslie in painting thirty paintings in thirty days. The 'challenge' was created by Leslie to inspire artists to paint and has only one rule. The rule is to 'have fun!'..."
For some reason I decided to do this year's September 30-in-30 challenge. I won't be painting per se, but I will be doing new digital art and art photos. The goal is 1 per day for 30 days.
It's not because I don't have anything else to do! In point of fact, I'm busier in my biz than I have ever been. I've been taking a class at our local community college every Wednesday evening this month to learn how to maximize my shop at Etsy [Butte College Small Business Development Center]; I'm prepping new cards and prints for this autumn's local art show/events to sell for holiday shoppers; I'm finishing a line of hand-painted, original art canvas tote bags. [More about these at a later time.] Let's see, what else? Oh, I'm finishing the design work on a 3rd coloring book for grownups. Whoa, that's a full plate!
So, why? I love creative challenges. A quick definition of challenge: a task or situation that tests someone's abilities. This challenge will let me stretch creative joints within a timeframe. I did something similar for myself a couple years ago I called "Picture A Day." From October 14, 2013 to October 6, 2014 I did 163 images. Not exactly 1 per day, but close to one every other day. What's truly hard is being creative every day. There are days when the muse doesn't even look in my direction. But I'm experienced in what I do so I know that I can coax the genie out of the wall, even if for but a hour.
So. Beginning tomorrow, September 1, 2016, I will be posting a new work on Leslie's 30-In-30 Blog each of the month's thirty days as well as here on my blog. If a day gets by-passed it'll be for a good reason. The Mr. and I are planning a 3-day camping trip in mid-September, but I'm going to try to do a few extra images a couple times to cover those days.
What classes, courses or challenges have you done this year for your business?
