I wrote recently that I've been one busy puppy, working hard. I'm an artist and I've been working my fingers to the bone! I'll have a new product for sale for the holiday season - I'll share the details soon. For this month I've been working to update and spit and polish my shop at Etsy. Part of that effort has been to consider this whole idea of branding. Realizing that I have a business brand and that all parts of my business are part and parcel of that brand. I've learned about that as part of the curriculum of a training taken weekly for Etsy shop owners at our local community college. Each Wednesday evening my brain explodes with information and ideas and "ah ha" lightbulb moments. One of those moments was the idea of business branding.
First let me admit a pretty hilarious thing: I have a career background in advertising and public relations. I know about branding and its importance to a business. However, for some reason, I didn't apply that to my own business. Good Grief Charlie Brown! Huge "doh" moment for me! The result is I've spent the past two weeks working to understand how branding applies to my business. The Mr. helped a great deal by being a sounding board. I realized that my business has 3 aspects that need to be under one umbrella:
As I worked on the logo I realized that I could boil down my business to one phrase, a tagline: For me, it all begins with my camera. I explain this in the "About" section of my Etsy shop:
It seems as though I've always been a photographer. And an artist. I began photography years ago when working as a newspaper reporter. The paper I worked for was small and had only one staff photographer, so I often took my own photos to accompany the stories I wrote. In my role as artist, I began as a painter, learning from my grandfather. His love was doing realistic paintings, in oils, of California missions and coastal scenes. Me? I have always been drawn to abstraction and to manipulating color and I loved the medium of acrylics.
I have more work to do, but this has been a great start. Now I have one business name, one "brand" to put out on social media and other means of promotion and publicity. Funny, I put into my business plan for this year to spruce up my Etsy shop...who knew it would lead to this?
Do you have a business? What is your tagline?
