The 'event' goes by the rather unwieldy name of NaBloPoMo. [I sound like a toddler saying it out loud.] The editors over at NaBloPoMo at BlogHer have a helpful listing of topic prompts for writers needing a quick idea. I don't usually, but today I actually liked the prompt for November 7: "Where is the one place you would never want to go on vacation that other people seem to love?" Answer: on a cruise.
For those who know me, this may sound strange 'cause when I travel I adore staying in hotels. And, aren't cruise ships like giant floating hotels? I have a brother and sister-in-law who love cruising and they've been on many cruises. However, for me, I've never been able to see the fascination. If it's ocean you want, I'd much rather go spend a week at the seaside community of Mendocino in Northern California. I'm not a "night life" person, never have been. Also, I've heard tales about the food on a cruise ship. Sounds yummy, but over-indulgence is something for which I pay a high price in discomfort anymore.
I will tell you a little secret. Going back to Hawaii is also on my Bucket List. I lived there for a year once upon a time and it was an adventure. My parents were both laid to rest in the military cemetery at Punchbowl above Honolulu. I'd like to make a pilgrimage, go to their "spot" and raise a glass and thank them for being the wonderful parents they were. Just one thing though...I don't want to fly to get there. I'd like to take a boat. Sigh, okay a cruise ship. Get off at the dock and see the hula dancers and all the stuff.
So, I guess taking a cruising vacation is something I'd want to do. However, only to Alaska and only to Hawaii. Is the universe listening?
